Veterans Day

November 11, 2009

It’s Veterans Day. So I went to find a local veteran. I thought to myself: “Moike,” because that’s what I call myself, “you need to go find a veteran because it’s Veterans Day.”

Another part of me thought: “Stop being such a douche.”

But the better part of me – apparently – went and found a veteran. Better yet, it was a veteran with a military kind of name. Something like – oh – Boots.

I couldn’t find anyone named Grenade.

So off I went to give a day of volunteer work to a veteran named Boots. Excuse me, but how fucking patriotic is that?

Nevermind that we spent the day undermining the industrial food supply (working on a greenhouse for winter greens and such), wishing for the collapse of capitalism, and contemplating ways to remain active in an inactive culture.

Lucky for me, Boots didn’t suffer any great ‘Nam flashbacks. Not a one. Well, other than a peculiar exuberance for his homemade kimchi. But he had a point: It was good.

I guess I keep forgetting that Boots’ ‘Nam-time was spent in Virginia – all three weeks of it. Imagine that: Boots was a pain in the ass to the military brass and they sent him home. Some things never change.

And what the hell did you do for veterans on Veterans Day? You communist bastards.

I tried a couple of communist, remember the russian and korean that I tried to still the hearts of. But now that was a long time ago and I decided to settle on a good old fashioned Vermonter (I figured that had to be in the middle of a communist and a capitalist).

I lowered the flag to half mast at my place of employment to honor the Vets, not work on some hippie contraption.

And one last thing I figure my life is a memorial to all Vets, if my father did not serve he probably would still be that cleaned up 50’s boy, which means I would be a good red blooded American that I should have been rather than this fucked up disgruntled American that I have turned out to be. Of course I think you may be able to take some of that credit as well.

Nov 12–Today–is my birthday. Who’s organizing the ’silent’ parade and vigil? And don’t forget the ’silent’ carols. A Day Of Silence. On your knees. Did you see my Morning Star? BELIEVE. (or die)

I will stop the Wars. I will beget a new hope. I will seek out the poor and wretched and marginalized and say: “Lo, run ye for office, my children. That’s where the jobs are.”

    Amen…oops….I mean, Aperson.

The best thing I read about Veterans Days was a reminder to honor the Vets of imperialism and war- the Native Americans, Peltier, Mumia, and thousands of others (mostly without bumper-sticker approved names) who’ve fought for freedom and liberty against capitalism and empire and war… yeah, happy veterans day indeed, to all the veterans of struggle who’ve fought for justice and peace.

And to those who’ve fought for something else, fuck off… you get memorial day (and gov’t health care).

Correction: Boots has informed me that I got my facts wrong (imagine that). I incorrectly wrote that Boots served three weeks during ‘Nam in Virginia. He actually served three months. But still in Virginia. I stand corrected.

Got something to say?
